The large basket is additionally dated "1986" and the small basket is dated "7-83". Large basket: 26 1/2" H x 36" W x 35" D. Smaller basket: 9 1/4" H x 10 1/4" W x 11" D.

Set of four (4) Scott County, Virginia graduated baskets signed by Jesse Jones (b. 1907) including one (1) miniature. All buttocks style consist of white oak, rib-type split construction with handles secured by nails at the rim. All signed in pencil "Jesse Jones" on the handle, two (2) dated circa 1980. Ranging in size from 5" H x 5 1/2" W to 12" H x 12 1/2" W. 20th century. Biography: Jesse Jones was a mountain basket weaver who lived in the isolated mountains of Scott County, VA. His work is featured in the book BASKETS AND BASKET MAKERS IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA, written by John Rice Irwin (1982).

Ribbed construction with tightly woven wearers, a wide woven rim, and fixed handle, signed on the center inner rim. Additionally inscribed to interior base center "Mrs. Mary M. Davis 1986 Woodbury, TN I-1976. 335 East Main St. 37190. Took from 260 to 300 hours to make this basket." 21" H x 19" W.

Graphically strong pieced Southern quilt made of cotton cloth in Oxblood brown,dark blue, and orange solid colors in the "Seven Stars" pattern (in reference to the star cluster "The Seven Pleiades" in the constellation Taurus). Quilting is by the piece. Quilting knots are visible on back. Initials "B. S." embroidered in a corner on back. 72" H x 89" W. Circa 1890. Note: Oxblood brown, dark blue, and orange colors are typically found in Carolina and Georgia quilts of the late 1800s. Dark quilting thread used over dark pieced area is a regional characteristic. Southern pieced cotton quilt stitched in distinctive colors of oxblood brown, dark blue, and orange in the "Slashed Star" pattern, first published by Ladies Art Co. as a mail order pattern offered in 1889. Quilting is by the piece. Quilting knots visible on back. 72" x 94". Circa 1890. Note: Oxblood brown, dark blue, and orange colors are typically found in Carolina and Georgia quilts of the late 1800s. Dark quilting thread used over dark pieced area is a regional characteristic. Similar sewing is seen in the "Seven Stars" pattern quilt that is also in this sale.

CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Appears unwashed, colors not faded, seams are secure. One water stain on front, measuring 11" x 6", in addition to minor spotting. American pieced cotton quilt, Sunburst pattern, comprised of lapis blue and red printed cotton with alternating medallions of brown and rose cotton chintz within ivory squares; embroidered ivory ground and backing. Approximately 114" x 110". Second quarter of the 19th century. Note: This pieced "Sunburst" pattern was popular in the Mid-Atlantic region in the first half of the 19th century. The quilt's large size, dense quilting, and the imported print fabrics suggest it was made in the 1830s-1840s. It descended in the Hazlehurst family of Baltimore, Maryland.

PROVENANCE: The Estate of F. Hamilton Hazlehurst, longtime chair of the Vanderbilt University Art Department.

CONDITION: Overall very good condition for age. Sunburst blocks containing a chintz print with a brown background show consistent fabric loss with batting showing through. Those made of the Lapis Blue and Red prints and the strip borders do not show any fabric deterioration. 1st item: Cotton red and green floral applique quilt attributed to Rachel Roess of Pennsylvania. The center panel contains an intricately engineered four-leafed plant surrounded by four fylfots expressing good luck, constructed with double green, cheddar yellow, and turkey red fabrics on an embroidered ivory ground with tiny applique touches to the geese, birds, and floral displays. The deep swag border is an original design as well as the quilt's edge, cut to echo the border. Approximately 90" x 88". Circa 1860's. 2nd-3rd items: Cabinet card photograph of Rachel Roess, taken by South Oil City, PA photographer J.W. Sires, and a 1946 photograph of Rachel Roess's direct descendants Lillian Roess Brecht, Elizabeth Brecht McKee, and Katherine (Kitty) McKee, who have all owned this quilt. Note: The quilt was washed in 2001 and was believed by the family to be about 100 years old at that time, however, the style and fabrics are more frequently associated with the 1860s or 70s. Provenance: by descent to Katherine McKee of Nashville (age 85 in 2021), from her mother Elizabeth Brecht McKee (born 1900), from her mother Lillian Elizabeth Roess Brecht (1876-1959), from her mother Rachel Aggers Roess, maker of this quilt. Rachel Roess was born in Chartiers Township, PA in 1844 and died in Oil City, PA 1925, where her husband worked in the oil business.

CONDITION: Expected fabric wear and fading for a quilt of this age. Thinning of the Double Green and Turkey Red fabrics with cotton batting coming through in places. Staining and spotting evident in white cloth. Turkey Red binding is weak and pulling away in spots. [See more photos →]

American Crazy quilt top, stitched of individual blocks with embroidered initials (unknownnames), a date "Jan 27, 1897", flowers, fans, animals, and leaves. There is one block with painted initials. The seam line embroidery stitching is exceptional with a multitude of different designs. Fabrics include a wide variety of suiting wool, challis, sculpted and plain velvets, and some silk. 74 3/4" H x 75" W. Note: The quilt top is unusually large for most crazy quilt projects.

Set of three (3) large Scott County, Virginia baskets signed by Jesse Jones (b. 1907). All buttocks style comprised of white oak, rib-type split construction with handles secured by nails at the rim. All signed in pencil "Jesse Jones" on the handle, one with additional pencil inscription "Christmas 1986". Ranging in size from 14" H x 16" W to 16" H x 19" W. 20th century. Biography: Jesse Jones was a mountain basket weaver who lived in the isolated mountains of Scott County, VA. His work is featured in the book BASKETS AND BASKET MAKERS IN SOUTHERN APPALACHIA, written by John Rice Irwin (1982).
