Simon Willard Tall Case Clock, mahogany “Roxbury” case with original Isaiah Thomas paper label. Arched bonnet top with three brass finials raised on plinths, joined by carved pierced scrolling fretwork. Arched dial with painted landscape, depicting two boys fishing in the foreground and a bridge with church steeple visible in the background. Painted spandrels having a gilt grapeleaf and floral/strawberry design. Face painted with roman numerals (seconds above) and “Warranted by Simon Willard Roxbury.” Original serpentine blued and pierced steel hands. The face is framed by two fluted columns with Doric brass capitals, a design element that repeats on the waist and terminates in brass stop-fluting. Waist door has molded edges enclosing a narrow band of contrasting wood inlay which is repeated on the base. Door interior bears Isaiah Thomas-engraved paper label along with carved dates of past maintenance dating from 1865 along with the name “Pevear” (possibly the name of the clock’s original owner). Original flared feet (one repaired). Original 8 day brass works with likely original steel bell. 90″H (not including fretwork and finial) 99″H(including fretwork and finial) x 19-1/2″W x 10″D. Massachusetts, circa 1800. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, purchased from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Will Scott of Gallatin, Tennessee in 1964. Condition: Case refinished with some areas of minor and expected shrinkage, most noticeably on base; small (under 1″ ) triangular veneer patch at right hand front corner of base. At least one finial is an old replacement. Some cracking to top of hood. Repairs to fretwork on clock’s top right. Some light crazing present to dial but all print on dial is crisp and clean and blacklight shows no evidence of touchups to painting; iron face plate is original. Weights are old but may not be original. Brass bob on pendulum old but probably not original; bears scratched inscription “August 1865”. Missing crank at time of examination. Professional examination of clock works shows they have been well maintained with normal and customary refurbishments (details on request) and are in good working order. Philip Leslie Hale (Massachusetts, 1865-1931), “La Donna” (“Mi Velata”), oil on canvas painting depicting a young woman in white dress with enigmatic expression, looking out from behind a “veil” of black lace curtains. Housed in a handcarved and painted wooden frame. 39_H x 25_W sight, 45_H x 31_W framed. Provenance – the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, TN; Sotheby’s December 1st, 1998 sale, lot 00172; private collection; Vose Galleries, Boston; the artist (detailed notes available on request). Biography: A member of the Boston School of painters, Philip Leslie Hale’s reputation as an artist was somewhat overshadowed during his lifetime by his teaching and writing. As a young man he studied painting at the Boston Museum School with Edmund Tarbell (who remained an indelible influence), privately with William Merritt Chase, and at the Art Students League in New York with J. Alden Weir. He furthered his art education in Europe, studying in Paris at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and visiting the major museums of Europe, where he was said to be influenced by the French Impressionists Sisley and Pissarro and by Vermeer. He lived in Giverny for a time and was acquainted with Claude Monet. After studying abroad for over a decade, he returned to America and was given a one man show. Although he painted a variety of subjects over the years, he is best recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and his landscapes. In 1902 he married respected fellow artist Lillian Westcott Hale. Philip Hale went on to build a reputation as an instructor, critic and writer, teaching at the Boston Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and authoring several books (including a study on Vermeer in 1913). A retrospective of his work at Vose Galleries of Boston in 1966 helped reignite interest in his paintings. Lady’s diamond solitaire ring containing one round brilliant cut diamond weighiing 3.04 carat, H color, VS2 clarity, measuring 9.27-9.33 x 5.70 mm. Polish: Very Good. Symmetry: Very Good. Fluorescence: None. Depth: 61.3%. Table: 59%. Girdle: Very Thin to Thick, Faceted. Culet: None. Together with a GIA report number 12310545, dated November 22, 2002. Frank Stick (American 1884-1966) oil on canvas of hunting dog in springtime landscape. Titled on canvas lower center, "Champion JoJo." Signed and dated lower right. Original giltwood frame. Sight: 28" H x 29-1/2" W. Frame: 33-1/2" H x 35-3/4" H. Brass plate: "Champion Jersey JoJo, Manitoba 1920." Note: Frank Leonard Stick is best known for his outdoor themed paintings, especially those relating to hunting and fishing. He studied under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, DE and alongside N.C.Wyeth and Frank E. Schoonover. His illustrations have appeared in "Sports Afield", "Field and Stream", "Collier's", "The Saturday Evening Post", and other magazines. Condition: Overall very good condition. Slight slack in canvas. Chinese watercolor on silk scroll painting, depicting a mountain landscape with Chinese characters, possibly a poem, in the upper right hand side. 84″L. Southern Federal inlaid sideboard. Serpentine top board over a conforming case with central long drawer, flanked by two side drawers with false fronts (giving the appearance of four small side drawers). Each drawer features quarter fan corner inlay, joined by crossbanding, and beaded edges, with oval brass pulls and beaded escutcheons. The stiles are inlaid with graduated stylized bellflowers or husks, which repeat on the cuffs of each leg (including the rear legs). Cherry with poplar secondary wood (including drawer sides) and yellow pine drawer bottoms. 39″H x 74″W x 27″D. Attributed to Western Virginia, possibly Winchester area, or Eastern Kentucky, circa 1800. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee; purchased from Jeannette Marks of Lexington, Kentucky in 1965. Condition: Few small scattered losses to inlay and abrasions to case, later finish with overall sun bleaching, shrinkage to top and sides. Drawers are missing some interior dividers. East Tennessee cherry one drawer huntboard table on tall turned legs, scratch beaded dovetailed drawer, post and panel sides and back. Poplar and yellow pine secondary. 41 5/8" H x 28 1/8" W x 18 3/8" D. Possibly Roane Co. Second quarter of the 19th century. Provenance: Descended in the family of James Madison Hartley (b. 1850-d. 1920; mayor of Kingston, TN, early 1900s; State Rep. 1907-1909). Condition: Older finish with some wear to drawer sides. Southern Chippendale Chest of Drawers or Bureau, cherry and poplar with molded rectangular top, two deep drawers flanking a prospect or cupboard door over three graduated drawers with molded edges. Nailed and dovetailed construction, full dustboards. Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts documentation label in top left drawer (September 11, 1982; #11590). 38-1/2"H (including feet) x 41-1/2"W x 19-1/8"D. Circa 1795-1805. Illustrated, p. 202 The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture by Nathan Harsh and Derita Williams. Provenance: Acquired in the 1920s in Middle Tennessee and attributed to Middle Tennessee in the book, although this early form with cupboard door section is most commonly associated with Virginia and this piece has been attributed to Virginia by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. However, most Virginia examples have yellow pine present as a secondary wood. This example has no yellow pine present, only poplar, the commonly used secondary wood of Middle Tennessee. Biography (courtesy AskArt): Prosper Louis Senat was born to an affluent Germantown, Pennsylvania family and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and the South Kensington School in London. He maintained a home in Germantown and summer home and studio in Kennebunkport, Maine, but traveled frequently to paint in foreign countries including Italy, Jamaica, and Bermuda. Pair of Federal tiger maple canopy beds, each with arched canopy. Plain and tapered headboard posts with mortised arched pine headboards. Columnar posts at foot of bed with reeded baluster form upper shafts over ring turned lower shafts and rectangular blocks to hold ends of rails. Turned tapered legs. Ends measure overall expected wear. Finials included but not pictured. 80"H from top of canopy to floor. 66"H from top of posts x 38-3/4"W x 78"D. Mattress (38 x 74") and box springs included. Washington County, Tennessee stoneware pottery jug by Charles Frederick Decker (1832-1914), inscribed in script on side "C. F. Decker" and impressed "2" denoting gallon capacity. 12" H. Biography (Courtesy of Carole Wahler): Charles Frederick Decker was born in Germany in 1832. He arrived in Philadelphia in his late teens. Oral tradition suggests he worked at the Remmey Pottery before establishing his Keystone pottery there at the age of 25. He moved his family to Delaware for a few years and then back to Philadelphia. After 1869, Decker moved to Virginia, six miles north of Abingdon. The pottery he operated there was located on land owned by a man named Mallicote (Mallicoat). In 1872, he established his pottery in the Nolichucky River Valley near present day Johnson City, Tennessee. For a year or so he operated in both Virginia and Tennessee. He was one of a number of potters who settled in the region during the early years of Reconstruction. He named his Chucky Valley pottery the same name that he had used in Pennsylvania, Keystone Pottery. His pottery was marketed not only in East Tennessee, but also in North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky. Condition: Excellent condition. [See more photos →]

Tennessee land grant signed by Sam Houston as Governor, March 12, 1828, granting 100 acres in Warren County, TN to Elizabeth Gordon. Boldly signed by Sam Houston (elected Tennessee's 7th governor 1827, resigned 1829). Contemporary ebonized frame. Sight: 14-3/4" x 12", framed 16" x 13-1/2". Warren Sheppard (American, 1858-1937) oil on canvas marine scene depicting the Grand Canal of Venice, signed lower left. Housed in an elaborate period gilt carved frame. Sight: 11 1/2" D x 17 1/2" W. Framed: 19" H x 25" W. Late 19th century. Note: This painting was evaluated by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. by then curator Perry B. Cott, letter included. Biography: A marine painter, Warren Sheppard was a designer and navigator of racing yachts and sailed widely along the New England coast. He won the famous New York-to-Bermuda race and published an authoritative book titled "Practical Navigation." He was also known for his canal scenes of Venice, many painted during his studies there from 1888-1893. He took art lessons from marine painter Maurice De Haas and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy. John Sevier (1745-1815) autographed single sheet document, signed as governor at Knoxville and dated 1805, certifying Hugh (Lawson) White as judge of the Superior Court in the State of Tennessee, also signed by William Macklin, secretary. Archivally matted and framed along with a printed copy of a portrait of Sevier, who served as first governor of Tennessee. Sheet sight 13" x 9-1/2", overall framed 19-1/2' x 21-1/2". Note: Hugh Lawson White was the son of James White, founder of Knoxville, Tennessee. Hugh went on to succeed Andrew Jackson in the U.S. Senate and was a Whig candidate for President in 1836. Provenance: Private Tennessee collection. Condition: Letter and frame in overall very good condition. Document formerly folded, fading to seal, couple of very small losses along top edge of letter, few light spots of foxing, overall very light toning. Couple of minor small abrasions to frame. William Spratling (American/Mexico 1900-1967) sterling silver pendant in the form of interlocking hands, one all silver, the other overlaid with faux tortoise design, attached to a 14" silver link chain by a round silver ring. Open clasp. Pendant measures 2-1/2" x 5". Marked on back with WS Script Circle S mark (William Spratling, Mexico 925) and Eagle 30 hallmark. Circa 1956-1962. Private Nashville Collection. George Paice (British, 1854-1925) equine portrait, oil on board, signed and dated lower left G. Paice '86. Board has British millboard label en verso; there is also a later gallery label and presumed owner's label reading: Cayce, Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Giltwood and composition molded frame. 8" x 13" sight, 12-1/2" x 16-1/2" framed. Condition: Overall good condition with some alligatoring to varnish layer and a few abrasions to frame edge. Oil on board painting attributed to Cornelius Hankins (Mississippi/Tennessee, 1863-1946), titled en verso "The Old Absinthe House," also inscribed "Wemyss" en verso. An impressionistic rendering of the historic New Orleans watering hole at night. Unsigned. 8" x 10" sight, 13-1/2" x 15-1/2" framed. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor. Note: the attribution to Hankins is made due to the fact that this painting descended to Mrs. Connor from her parents, William Hatch Wemyss and Helen Peters Wemyss (and stepmother, Ellen Wemyss), along with a companion scene of a New Orleans courtyard, similar in style, of the same size and also oil on board, signed by Hankins (that painting remains in the family). The Wemyss family were devoted patrons of Hankins. They commissioned him to paint several works including a portrait of Helen Wemyss and depictions of the family gardens at Fairvue Plantation in Gallatin, Tennessee. Condition: Excellent condition. Civil War letter archive of Private Frank P. Longstreet, 137th Regiment , Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company A, friend of J. J Dewey. Includes six letters from 1862 – 1865. Of the group, the September 27, 1862 Sharpsburg, Maryland (Antietam) letter is the most poignant and graphic in the description of the carnage and loss of life: "Our Brigade was in the late great battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam)…..We arrived on the battlefield a week ago yesterday and the Regt worked all day Saturday and Sunday burying the dead. The scene was revolting to the extreme. The dead in the field where we worked were piked up by the hundreds all over the field. Some with their heads shot entirely off and some with their head partially off. The scenes begs description. They had lain there three or four days and so sultry had been the atmosphere that decomposition had been making rapid progress. All extremities(?sp) had swollen beyond point of possible recognition. The weather is becoming more settled and it is quite probable that the army will move in a few days in the direction of Fredricksburg, the grand center of attention at present. Gen Hooker means I think to let the rebels on the other side of the Rappahannock know and feel that this army is not to be bamboseled by them any longer. The soldiers have unbounded confidence in the ability of Gen. Joe Hooker to command them and lead them on to victory.." Framed Royal Vienna porcelain plate of the Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) with cobalt blue and celadon green ground, gilded floral motif with silvered accents housed in a round, Florentine, ornately carved, pierced giltwood frame of a foliage design. On the underside of the plate is the Royal Vienna Bindenschild mark and the following markings: "Dec: 171/Depose/ 4094 36.a." A signature has been partially gilded over near the sitter's rose. Framed: 17-1/2" x 17-1/2" Sight: 9-1/2" x 9-1/2". Condition: Frame has lost two pieces of its foliage, with areas of chipping of gilding and wood, in particular on the left side of the frame. Shaped gallery with spindled sides, two long drawers over two short central drawers, flanked by cabinets on each side, raised on turned legs. Miniature portrait, possibly an early depiction of James K. Polk, attributed to Charles Burton. Charcoal on paper, bust-length profile of a man with receding hairline in formal attire, seated in a “fancy” painted chair. Antique, but possibly not original giltwood molded frame and paper mat. 4-1/4″ x 3-1/8″ sight, 8 x 7″ framed. Circa 1820. Note en verso states that this portrait was purchased from the Collier-Crichlow estate auction in Murfreesboro, TN in 1985. A portrait of Andrew Jackson was also listed in that auction. This portrait was sold again in 1993 at the auction of the Absalom Scales home in Eagleville, where it was listed as “a period miniature sketch of Pres. James K. Polk in a gold leaf frame” (a poster from that auction is included with this lot). The portrait bears a strong resemblance to some twenty five other charcoal miniature portraits cataloged by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, nearly all of which have the identical chair depicted and are attributed to Burton. Charles Burton is known to have produced portraits of sitters in North Carolina, New York City, Baltimore, and Jefferson County, Virginia from about 1819-1842. Few early profile portraits of Polk exist for comparison. The future president was born in North Carolina in 1795 and returned there for school from 1816-1818 and periodically throughout his life. Unframed. 10 3/4" H x 14 1/2" W. Early 20th century. Mayna Treanor Avent was born at Tulip Grove Mansion (across from the Hermitage), studied in Cincinnati and at the Julian Academy in Paris. Her work is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery, The White House, and The Tennessee State Museum, Nashville. Werner Wildner (Nashville, Tennessee, 1925-2004) surrealist watercolor and gouache on paper painting of a gnome and scarecrow in a barren landscape, with owl swooping overhead. The gnome is rendered in bright colors while all around him is monochrome and solemn. Signed with artist’s initial lower left. Double matted and framed under glass in a molded silvered frame. 9-1/4″ x 11-1/2″ sight, 15″ x 17″ framed. Provenance: a Nashville, Tennessee estate. Biography: Wildner was born in Germany but moved to Detroit with his family as a child and, as a teenager, to Nashville. He served in the Army in 1944 and went on to study art briefly at the Mienzinger Art School in Detroit. He returned to Nashville to practice commercial art, but by the mid-1950s had decided to pursue his own art career. Whimsical animals and fantastical, often grotesque creatures were a recurring theme of his work. Wildner met with critical and commercial success after a 1962 exhibit of his art (at what is now known as Cheekwood). However, the death of his parents and collapse of his marriage in the 1970s led him to become reclusive in the last two decades of his life. Both sides dated 1860 in circular brass frame. Condition – Lincoln ferrotype has losses to the nose, tarnished brass frame. 15/16" diameter. 3rd item – 1860 two sided John Bell (Tennessee) campaign token with ferrotypes of John Bell on one side; the Vice Presidential running mate image, Edward Everett, is missing on the other side. Both sides dated 1860 in a circular brass frame. Condition – some losses to the top of the John Bell image as well as scattered rust spots. Klepper Iron Foundry (Kentucky) Victorian / Eastlake cast iron aquarium on stand, marked on the underside of the aquarium "C.F. Klepper, Cov. KY, Pat. Feb. 21 '82." Retains the original black paint. 37 1/2" H x 26 1/2" W x 16 1/2" D. Late 19th century. Condition: Overall very good condition with some oxidation to the metal, especially to the base and interior of the aquarium. Note: the origin of this bench was a mystery to Mrs. Connor; while it bears some similarities to furniture from the West Indies and Asia, it has some Empire elements as well and resided at her grandparents' home Maple Shade in Gallatin, Tennessee, before being moved to Fairvue. Large Civil War letter archive including mostly soldiers from Company E, 3rd Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers – William Fitch, John J. Dewey, John and Ole Nelson, and J. F. Boucher. William Fitch (W.F.) Dewey (Co E 3rd Reg. Minn Vol) archive includes his military death notice dated Aug 31st 1863 addressed to William's father, inventory of W. F. Dewey taken at the time of death, a letter from W.F. Dewey from Camp Doan Dec. 28, 1861, and a letter dated April 1862 from W.F. Dewey. The death notice of W.F. Dewey from Henry Curry to Dewey's father, Dunning Dewey, states "your son W.F. Dewey died in the Hospital knight before last. He was taken sick three weeks ago…" Another letter from Capt. E. Baker, Co. E 3rd Minnesota Volunteers Oct. 2nd, 1863 – "Mr. Dunning Dewey, Dear Sir: I am having (sp?) to announce to you the death of your son, W. F. Dewey at the General Hospital at Helena Ark..of Typhoid Fever….I cannot close without bearing testimony of his many excellent qualities. He was upright in all his dealings, just, and generous, always prompt and cheerful in the performance of his duties he had the confidence and esteem of his officers and the affections of all his comrades… That heaven may comfort you for this sacrifice in a most just + holy cause is the prayer of your Obt Servant…" Excerpts from Dec. 28 1861 Camp Doan letter from W.F. Dewey to his father – "we are guarding bridges all the time now….We have drawn our Jackets caps and expect new guns soon. the country is full of niggers they are having fine times now between Christmas and New Years." Excerpts from April 1862 letter from W.F. Dewey to his father – "we are 6 miles from Nashville guarding a RR Bridge.. I have not seen but one union man since we came here.. I saw fort Donaldson and fort Zollicoffer. I thought we was going right ahead when we got here but we are at our old trade again guarding bridges. I am one of the generals body guard there was picked out of each regt in the brigade. We get one horse armed with (?") carbine and revolver. There is about 100,000 men in this state some of them is 60 miles below here. the rebels are making a stand at Murphresborough they think they will whip us there." (Note page one has a section torn out of it). This letter also has a drawing of man with a kepi and slouch hat and displays grotesque features. John J. Dewey archive (brother of William Fitch Dewey) includes a small account book, March 9th, 1862 from Camp Shepherdsville, August 1864 from Pine Bluff Arkansas, two letters addressed to J.J. Dewey from friend, J. Bowher(?sp), and a 19th century geneology paper listing the Dewey family including J.J. and W.F. Dewey. J.J. Dewey is listed as being born March 8, 1843 and Wm Fitch Dewey was born July 21, 1841. Excerpts of John J. Dewey account book – Fort Snelling, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Entries begin July 11, 1864. Records various supply purchases. Entry for December 16, 1864 – Deserter shot for sentence of Court Marshall, Duvall's Bluff, Ark. Records a poem with one of the stanzas, "Discourage in our ranks starvation in our land the officer eats the flour bread the privates eat the brand." Excerpts from 1862 Camp Shepherdsville letter – "we expect to go down the river to have a hand in taking Memphis and New Orleans. We are wiling to go anywhere to get out of this madhole. We are all eager fight…" Excerpts from May 1862 Murfreesboro, Tenn letter – "we started from here and went to Columbia where we expected to have some fire but we was fooled..we did not see a southern soldier only some that had been taken prisoners and sent back to Columbia." Excerpts from 1864 Pine Bluff letter – Discusses several sick in camp including writer who became sick resulting in his trip on the boat to Ark. "While I was sick I was unable to take care of my things so I left them in charge of one the guards and by some neglect when we changed boats they were left behind so I lost every thing I had…."(letter incomplete). Excerpts from Little Rock, Ark Nov 1863 letter from friend Bowher(?) writing to J.J. Dewey, "We have fine times here as far as Duty is concerned nothing hard to do though it is very steaddy work." Excerpts from Little Rock, Ark Aug 10 (Year?) – (possible partial letter) – "The rebels seem to trying to take this place. I suppose the 6th Regt is having a little experience fighting now… I believe there is about 80 pieces of artillery here and about 6000 troops. I heard there was about 50,000 troops in and around Little Rock. It will take more men than the rebels can bring against us to take these places. This section of the country swarms gurillas, but our picket duty is not very dangerous for the cavalry does all the scouting and advance picket duty." J remain here all the rest are at Camp Pope, or what was formerly called Yellow Medicine…Nearly all our aboriginal brethren have bidden us adieu and are now on their long and tedious journey to F. Randall on the upper Mo. river, where they will undoubtably live the remainder of their lives. I say to live, No, that is not so, they merely exist and not live. In the place of Indians, we have received Negroes….We are going to take all these colored people that are able to drive mules with us, and woe be to the poor Indian where Cuffy get after him…"Letters from John Nelson includes an excerpt from Preston Lakes (Ft. Ridgely) Dec 17th 1863 – "There is nothing new up here. We do not see any only when we go to Ridgely or Hutchison or Glencoe. the only white men we see up here are these that are here trapping. There is no chance of seeing any indians as they are more scarse than hens teath." John Nelson Jan 16th 1865 letter summary – general camp life letter discussing horses in the fort and the fact stables have not been built for them. Another discussion regards the ladies in the vicinity of the fort, "I am astonished at the great number of females or rather young ladies there are on the creek this winter…" Last remaining letter of this large archive, J. F. Boucher(?sp) Co. E 3rd Minn Duvals Bluff Ark. Aug. 30th 1863 – "There is only two Divisions of us 1st and 2nd under Gen Steel. Ours is the 2nd..I dont know what ailes Fitch (referring to W. Together with four (4 ) early newspaper/periodical Items, including: Harper's Weekly page – The War in Tennessee; The Republican Newspaper dated April 18, 1865 (Lincoln Assasination); Early Civil War era Knoxville Advertising paper; and The Lynchburg Virginian newspaper dated May 20, 1830. Note: The Whig was a American newspaper published in the mid-nineteenth century and edited by William G. "Parson" Brownlow (1805Ð1877, 17th governor of TN, 1865-1869). The paper's primary purpose was the promotion and defense of Whig Party political figures and ideals. In the years leading up to the Civil War, the Whig became the mouthpiece for East Tennessee's anti-secessionist movement. The Whig was published under several names throughout its existence, namely the Tennessee Whig, the Jonesborough Whig, the Knoxville Whig, and other variations. Sixth plate size tintype or ferrotype of Chyle L. Farris (Faris) who served for the Union during the Civil War in Company K of the Seventh Kentucky Calvary, shown in uniform with his sword with gilt highlights. His pension record shows he was wounded in the right testicle from a pistol gunshot and the left foot in 1863. His record also shows he spent three months in Andersonville prison and was still suffering from diarrhea systems acquired from the camp into 1864. Despite his wounds, he went on to father eight children. Housed in a carved gutta percha case. Overall Case – 4 7/8" H x 4" W. Condition: Ferrotype overall very good condition. Loose hinges to case. Navajo Ye'ii pictoral rug depicting three (3) figures with alternating corn stalks on beige ground with colors of red, rose, pink, yellow, orange and green all within a brown border. 59" x 36". 1st half 20th century. Provenance: This rug was given to the consignor's parents in the late 1930's as a wedding present by Navajo Indians on the reservation near the Canyon de Chelly of Arizona. John Karl "Jack" Kershaw (Tennessee, 1913-2010) abstract oil on board, unsigned. Housed in a painted wooden frame. Sight – 39 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed – 45 1/2" H x 35 1/2" W. Provenance: Estate of Jack Kershaw. Biography: Jack Kershaw studied art at Vanderbilt University and in the 1920s became associated with a group of intellectuals who called themselves The Fugitive Poets. In the 1930s, he worked as Federal director of the Tennessee Art Project (a job in which he worked as one of famed sculptor William EdmondsonÕs supervisors). He also served as an art consultant for The Kenyon Review and for Nashville Mayor Ben West, and was a member of the first Tennessee Arts Commission. His work prior to 1950 consisted mostly of portraits (both paintings and sculptures), and paintings of landscapes and interiors. In 1953, as Chairman of the Nashville Committee for the Coordination of the Arts, Kershaw was instrumental in developing the lower level of the Nashville Parthenon for use as a permanent art gallery. Around this time he and his wife, the former Mary Noel, decided to attend law school; he was admitted to the bar in the 1960s. However, he continued to paint, sculpt and draw, becoming more interested in abstract works.For much of his career, Kershaw kept records of what he made and who bought it; purchasers of his art from 1938-1980 included recording artists Dinah Shore, and Grace Creswell, Penn Warren, Tupper Saussy, The City of Nashville, and Prince Alexander of Hohenzollern (who commissioned a portrait). Kershaw exhibited at the Holbrook Museum (University of Georgia at Athens, with Phillip Perkins); University of Connecticut (one man exhibition); the University of Kentucky; Yale University; University of Tennessee (one man exhibition); Peabody College; the University of Chicago; Carlton College in Minnesota; Bridgewater College in Virginia; The Centennial Club of Nashville; the Ray Jordon Gallery; Cohen Memorial and Art Investments Gallery in Nashville; and Avanti Gallery and Caravan House in New York City among others. Kershaw designed the 1951 Christmas Card for WSM-Radio, painted murals for the Veterans Club of Nashville in 1953, and in 1974 published ChristÕs Mass, a series of religious themed drawings and verses. His later paintings took an increasingly surreal tone and focused heavily on historical elements; the little girl in this painting appeared in a series of paintings mourning the loss of the Old South. The Civil War provided frequent subject material, most notably the 25-foot title sculpture for the privately owned Nathan Bedford Forrest Memorial Park in Nashville. Kershaw was also a political figure. He was one of the attorneys representing James Earl Ray, who confessed to killing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but then recanted and spend the rest of his life trying unsuccessfully to obtain a jury trial. Cabriole front legs with carved scrolls at knees and block turned back legs, joined by side and back stretchers with block turnings and a recessed central serpentine stretcher. 37"H. Civil War Union letters all dated 1863 and written to various officers including General M.C. Meigs, the Quarter Master General in Washington City, D.C., and Col. Bingham plus others. Subjects include the request from an attorney at law in Louisville, KY of a voucher for a wagon that was taken from "Drew, who is a hard working negro" and a 3 plus page letter to General Meigs discussing the disgraceful conduct of a Union officer in accepting bribes from steamboat owners. (General Meigs is known in history for fighting corruption in the Army). Other letters request the supply of horses; transportation of cotton; overdue payment for horse feed and building materials. Group also includes one notarized statement from Shelby County, Tennesse, July, 1863, stating that the steamboat "Anglo-Saxon" is unsafe for navigation. John Karl "Jack" Kershaw (Tennessee, 1913-2010) oil on canvas painting, surrealist scene depicting a young girl running amidst the columns of a Southern mansion in ruins, beneath a canopy of Spanish moss covered trees. Signed lower right "Kershaw". 34" H x 27 1/4" W. Unframed. Provenance: Estate of Jack Kershaw. Biography: Jack Kershaw studied art at Vanderbilt University and in the 1920s became associated with a group of intellectuals who called themselves The Fugitive Poets. In the 1930s, he worked as Federal director of the Tennessee Art Project (a job in which he worked as one of famed sculptor William EdmondsonÕs supervisors). He also served as an art consultant for The Kenyon Review and for Nashville Mayor Ben West, and was a member of the first Tennessee Arts Commission. His work prior to 1950 consisted mostly of portraits (both paintings and sculptures), and paintings of landscapes and interiors. In 1953, as Chairman of the Nashville Committee for the Coordination of the Arts, Kershaw was instrumental in developing the lower level of the Nashville Parthenon for use as a permanent art gallery. Around this time he and his wife, the former Mary Noel, decided to attend law school; he was admitted to the bar in the 1960s. However, he continued to paint, sculpt and draw, becoming more interested in abstract works.For much of his career, Kershaw kept records of what he made and who bought it; purchasers of his art from 1938-1980 included recording artists Dinah Shore, and Grace Creswell, Penn Warren, Tupper Saussy, The City of Nashville, and Prince Alexander of Hohenzollern (who commissioned a portrait). Kershaw exhibited at the Holbrook Museum (University of Georgia at Athens, with Phillip Perkins); University of Connecticut (one man exhibition); the University of Kentucky; Yale University; University of Tennessee (one man exhibition); Peabody College; the University of Chicago; Carlton College in Minnesota; Bridgewater College in Virginia; The Centennial Club of Nashville; the Ray Jordon Gallery; Cohen Memorial and Art Investments Gallery in Nashville; and Avanti Gallery and Caravan House in New York City among others. Kershaw designed the 1951 Christmas Card for WSM-Radio, painted murals for the Veterans Club of Nashville in 1953, and in 1974 published ChristÕs Mass, a series of religious themed drawings and verses. His later paintings took an increasingly surreal tone and focused heavily on historical elements; the little girl in this painting appeared in a series of paintings mourning the loss of the Old South. The Civil War provided frequent subject material, most notably the 25-foot title sculpture for the privately owned Nathan Bedford Forrest Memorial Park in Nashville. Kershaw was also a political figure. He was one of the attorneys representing James Earl Ray, who confessed to killing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but then recanted and spend the rest of his life trying unsuccessfully to obtain a jury trial. New England, circa 1820. 2nd item: American Federal Sheraton style armchair, possibly mulberry, with rectangular tablet back over two narrow horizontal reeded slats joined by three balls; reeded curved armrests ending in vasiform supports, over square and round turned posts ending in ring and tapered feet. Rust colored leather upholstered seat with brass tacks. 33-1/2"H x 21-3/4"W x 20"D. Possibly Southern, circa 1815. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee, purchased in Georgia in the 1960s. Condition: 1st item: Moderate wear to paint, loss to tip of right foot. 2nd item: Original surface but areas of both back legs stripped; chips/losses to front feet tips, repair patch to chair's left armrest, later upholstery.
