Attributed to Clarence Alfred Stagg (Tennessee, 1902-1942) modernist oil on canvas painting depicting a vase of yellow flowers seated on a chair, made prominent through a distorted perspective, with a street scene visible in the upper left corner and a pitcher in the lower right foreground. Unsigned. Previous owner’s name inscribed on stretcher, verso. Light-stained wood frame. Sight 25 in. H x 20 1/2 in. W. Frame: 30 1/2 in. H x 26 in. W. Note: Artist Clarence Stagg was born in Nashville and studied in the Northeast, but returned to Tennessee in 1929 and opened an art studio. He worked primarily in the 1930s and was influenced by Cubism and Futurism.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Eugenia Moore of Nashville, by descent from her husband Benjamin Moore’s relative, the artist Sue Joy of Nashville (1903-1960). The Moores inherited multiple paintings by both Sue Joy and her friend, Clarence Stagg.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Light grime. Some tiny scuffs along lower right edge. 1 in. scratch upper right edge.
