Pair of gilt and patinated bronze Atlas lamps, on marbleized painted bases, likely after Pierre Lartigue and Louis Lennel’s popular 1777 depiction. Each lamp depicts a bearded Atlas carrying a celestial metal globe between his shoulders, wearing only a headband and a fig leaf; he takes a step, his hands above his hips. Both lamps are fitted with a finial and 2 working switches marked “Leviton.”. 22 1/2 in. H x 5 1/2 in. W (base) x 5 3/4 D (globe). 20th century
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Michael Spalding, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Overall fair condition with loss to gilt and scratches to both globes. Right globe has been reattached to Atlas. Left Atlas has a slight lean and an old repair to the celestial orb. Both lamp cords and harps are contemporary replacements.
