Late 19th century oil on canvas autumn landscape depicting a river flowing through a wooded ravine. Signed “Turner” in red, lower left corner. Period, likely original Aesthetic Movement style giltwood and molded composition frame with plaque at lower center inscribed “Helen Maria Turner” (American/Louisiana, 1858-1958). Sight: 29 1/2 in. H x 22 1/2 in. W. Frame: 37 in. H x 31 in. W. Note: Helen Maria Turner studied in New York and was known to have painted landscapes, although she was best known for impressionist portraits and genre scenes. The difference between the style of the present landscape and her more prolific Impressionist works, and the number of other painters of the period named Turner makes precise attribution difficult. The painting was found in Georgia.
CONDITION: Yellowing to varnish layer. Two small areas of retouch visible under UV light including to mountain (with corresponding patch en verso) and center left tree area. Light craquelure. Signature does not flouresce.
