Xanthus Russell Smith (Pennsylvania, 1839-1929) oil-on-paper self-portrait that depicts the artist in bust-length in a brown suit with a red necktie and gold-rimmed glasses and set against a brown background. Signed and dated lower right, “X.S. Nov., 1894.” Clark Point Gallery, Maine, labels affixed to backing. Housed in a carved wood frame with a foliate carved filet and placard with artist information and title. Sight: 9 1/4 in. H x 6 1/2 in. W. Framed: 14 in. H x 11 1/4 in. W. 1894.
PROVENANCE: Collection of Patricia and Paul DeHaan, Kalamazoo, MI; McClees Galleries, Haverford, PA; Clark Point Gallery, Southwest Harbor, ME.
CONDITION: A couple of minor, shallow scratches to the lower half of the right margin; otherwise, very good condition. Frame with minor scattered abrasions.
