Martin Rettig (American/Cincinnati, 1855-1932) oil on canvas floral still life painting, depicting lush peonies in a ceramic vase beside a ladies’ sewing basket. Period ripple carved and beaded giltwood frame. Signed “M. Rettig” lower right. Closson Cincinnati framing label verso. Sight: 23 in. H x 21 in. W. Frame: 28 in. H x 26 in. W. Biographical Note: Martin Rettig was known as a painter specializing in floral still lifes, as well as a Rookwood Pottery decorator. Rettig was the younger brother of artist John Rettig (one of John Wettig’s paintings is also for sale in this auction from the same collection). Like his brother, Martin Rettig studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati with Frank Duveneck and later was considered to be an authority on the works of the master. Martin Rettig was active in the Cincinnati Art Club and served as its president from 1918-1920. (Source: The Harmon Museum).
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection; by descent in a Cincinnati family.
CONDITION: Painting in overall good condition. There is a faint scratch and tiny chip to lower right edge/corner. Frame has several spots of edge chipping and small losses.
