Eight (8) Knoxville, Tennessee coin silver teaspoons, 6 with oval fiddle tipt handles, and 2 with plain downturned fiddle handles, all marked S. BELL in rectangles for Samuel Bell (1797-1881), working Knoxville, TN, 1819-1852 and later, Texas. According to “Tennessee Silversmiths” by Dr. Benjamin H. Caldwell, Jr., these marks are among those used by Bell during the time he worked in Knoxville. Bell was a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker, and he also served two terms as Knoxville’s mayor before migrating to Texas. 6 in. and 6 1/8 in. L. 6.46 troy ounces.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Marty and David Black, Rockford, TN.
CONDITION: All spoons with pitting to the bowls and with a script monogram or name. One spoon with tear on the lower bowl.
