English inlaid burlwood Davenport Desk, surmounted by a lockable hinged upper correspondence organizer with a brass gallery, atop a locking, hinged lid. Lid lifts to reveal a green embossed leather writing surface, which pulls out for use and lifts for storage of pens, paper, and ink. The cantilevered top creates a recessed kneehole area and is joined to a moulded plinth base by corbels and pilasters, all resting on 4 castors. The locking right side door encloses 4 vertical drawers with brass pulls. All sides are finished with contrasting lightwood marquetry inlay, with geometric and foliate motifs to front, top, sides, and back. Retains locks and keys. 23 in. L x 22 in. W x 32 1/2 in. H. Mid to late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Light scuffs and scratches overall consistent with use, particularly at base and where side door opens. Some ink stains to exterior lid and interior storage compartments.
