Large English mahogany book press with integrated drawer and orb finial. Drawer has a metal pull and dovetail construction. First half 19th century, or earlier. Includes a 600-page pharmacist’s prescription ledger stamped “R.M. Sterrett, Druggist, 6130 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA.” spanning 1893 – 1896. 26 1/4 in. L x 15 5/8 in. W x 35 in. H.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Insect damage to press case and drawer. Staining to wood. Drawer bottom has some loss and separation to boards. Some screws have been replaced, and screw covers are missing. Ledger condition has dry rot to leather exterior, overall good condition interior, with foxing consistent with age.
