Pertaining to ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, Greek, and Persian historians. 12 in. H x 9 in. W. 2nd Item: Justus Lipsius, Iusti Lipsi De Militia Romana Libri Quinque (Five Books on the Roman Militia), Antwerp: Officina Plantiniana, 1598. 4to. Contemporary limp vellum-wrapped boards with blind-stamped imprint and frame to cover, cord securing ties. Flemish humanist Justus Lipsius’ detailed Latin commentary on Roman military organization and discipline, specifically analyzing the writings of the Greek historian Polybius. 11 in. H x 7 1/2 in. W.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Deborah and Kent Vauclain Bissell, Sr., by descent from his grandfather, Dr. Austin Flint Morris (1868-1906) of New Jersey, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, or his great-uncle, William Cullen Morris (1874-1975) of New York. Morris was a Vice President of Con Edison and engineer instrumental in the construction of the Astoria Tunnel.
CONDITION: Each in good condition with expected age-related wear, including: toning, soiling and dampstaining to vellum covers, toning and foxing to pages, pen and pencil writing to interior; looseness to spines. 2nd Item (Lipsius): 1 1/2 in x 1 1/2 in. chip to fore edge of title page; a few loose leaves; approx. 10 leaves missing.
