Lot 510: Audubon Sandpiper Print, Havell 1836 Edition

Robert Havell (1793-1878) after John James Audubon (American 1785-1851), etching and aquatint on wove paper with J. Whatman watermark, Plate 59 from the Birds of America Double Elephant Folio, first edition, 1836, depicting the “Pectoral Sandpiper” (Tringa Pectoralis), Male and Female. Framed under glass in a stained and molded wood frame. Plate: 12 1/8 in. H x 19 1/4 in. W. Sheet: 24 7/8 in. H x 38 in. W. Frame: 20 1/2 in. H x 27 in. W. 

PROVENANCE: Collection of Christine Heineman, Garden City New York, by descent to present consignor.

CONDITION: Margins have been folded under to accommodate frame. Some dampstaining to margin. One margin contains pencil instructions to fold margins. Scattered foxing and rippling to paper, light toning. 1 1/4 in loss to one corner of margin. Frame with 2 in. area of loss to wood, lower left corner.
