Large English handblown and reverse-painted pharmacy (or specie) jar, likely by York Glass Company, labeled “Magnesia”. The coat of arms (possibly those of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries) has a royal warrant in Latin text: “Honi. Soit. Qui / Mal Y Pensf / Treu Und Fest.” Painted white with pink, blue, red, and green details, including a gilded lion, unicorn, crests, and other regal motifs. 31 in. H x 16 in. W x 16 1/4 in. D. 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Crack and restoration to backside of jar, appears stable. Painted lettering and gilding in overall very good condition. Missing lid. Includes custom plywood crate, contemporary.
