A pair of Italian faience albarello type or majolica apothecary jars of narrow-waisted form, with opposing central portrait vignettes, surrounded by depictions of battle implements and armory on a blue ground. The coat of arms may represent Alof de Wignacourt, Grand Master of the Order of Malta, 1601 – 1622. Painted “1602” on the bottom verso, and paper labels inside marked “Italy – Castel Durante” by the collector. Red label on bottom of both vessels denotes ex. Max M. Warsaw Collection (Chicago) and numbered I-90 and I-91, likely from a past auction. 17 1/2 in. H. x 5 1/2 in. D. 19th century or earlier.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Small chips to rim interior and base.
