Pair of Delft blue and white tin-glazed earthenware apothecary vessels of tall, baluster forms, each with double twisted figural snake handles (symbolic of Asclepius, the Greek deity of medicine and healing) over Bacchus masks, the centers hand painted with scenes of figures in landscapes, on pedestal feet with foliate painted decoration. Signed to the underside “PVB”, a mark attributed to Paulus van der Bergh, also known as Paulus Verburg, working in Holland, second half of the 18th century. 14 1/2 in. H x 9 in. W x 6 1/4 in. D. Note: Jars have fragments of label ex: Max M. Warsaw Collection (Chicago).
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Excellent condition overall, especially considering age and use.
