After Paul Dubois (French, 1827-1905) cast patinated bronze sculpture, “Jean Baptiste Enfant” (Saint John the Baptist as a Child). Inscribed “P. Dubois Rome 1861” with F. Barbedienne Paris foundry mark, and “Reduction Mecanique A. Collas” cartouche. Dimensions: 15 1/4 in. H x 4 1/2 in. W x 5 in. D. Note: Achille Collas (1795-1859) was a French engineer and inventor who developed a machine to copy sculptures at a smaller scale, the so-called “reduction mechanique”, which popularized small sculptures and has been credited with being almost entirely responsible for the transformation of the bronze industry in the mid 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Mr. and Mrs. David Allen, Springfield, Tennessee.
