Lot 240: Jas. Hamilton Greensboro PA Jug, 3 Gallon Ovoid Form

Jas. Hamilton Greensboro, Pennsylvania 3-gallon cobalt stenciled and decorated stoneware jug. Ovoid form, stenciled in the center “Jas. Hamilton Co., Greensboro PA.”  Freehand cobalt lines on the front, below the neck and above the base. Stenciled leaf garlands and “3,” denoting gallon capacity.  Applied strap handle with cobalt accent. Carved wooden cork, likely later.16 1/4 in. H x  10 in D.  3rd quarter of 19th century.

PROVENANCE:  Private Knox County, TN collection.

CONDITION: Overall good condition with expected wear for age.  Small glaze flakes to bottom right side and kiln mark on top right.  Slight vertical cracks around back and base.
