American School oil on canvas portrait of a child and a small dog before a wooded landscape and stream. The child wears a white dress with blue bows, a coral necklace, and red shoes while they place their right hand on the back of a chair. Unsigned. Housed in an antique wooden frame. Canvas: 30 in. H x 25 in. W. Sight: 29 3/4 in. H x 24 3/4 in. W. Framed: 35 in. H x 30 in. W. First quarter of 19th century.
PROVENANCE: A Kentucky estate, acquired in a Chattanooga area auction in the 1980s.
CONDITION: Canvas has been clumsily relined. Varnish is old and markedly discolored with age and embedded grime. Marked, stable craquelure or drying cracks with retouch throughout plus alligatoring to lower left corner. Areas of localized retouching, especially along right edge, fluoresce differently than retouch to cracks, evidencing multiple campaigns of restoration having taken place at different times. An approximately 1/4-inch wide wooden strip/spacer is affixed to right edge and painted to extend scene slightly, likely added during relining, which also fluoresces differently. Frame with losses and scattered abrasions, especially to corners, plus pinpoint puncture to upper right.
