Southern Federal cherry Butler’s desk and bookcase of two sections, yellow pine secondary. Top section having a double-stacked ogee cornice over a plain frieze with a lower beaded edge over two cabinet doors with molded mullions having a total of twelve panes and two interior shelves. Lower section with a plain molded top over a pull-out butler’s desk with double drawer facade over three dovetailed graduated drawers. All having line inlay surrounds, scratch-beading. and inlaid kite escutcheons. Desk interior with seven pigeon holes above two banks of four dovetailed drawers with scratch-beading and line inlay. Lower section rests on shaped bracket feet with returns. Upper section has the top and bottom dovetailed. Both sections with an old label, “H. N. Thompson”. Overall – 80 1/4 in. H. Chest of drawers: 38 1/2 in. L x 19 5/8 in. W x 43 1/2 in. H. Bookcase: 41 3/4 in. L x 19 3/8 in. W x 39 1/2 in. H. Possibly Virginia, first quarter of the 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Donna C. Rogers, Greeneville, TN.
CONDITION: Older refinish. Originally had brass pulls with drawers having old patches for previous pull placements. Older hinge repairs for the bookcase top. Bottom drawer of the lower case with buildup of drawer sides. Old, scattered wood fill including the right corner molding of the desk and bottom lower left corner of drawer of desk.
