Albrecht Durer (German, 1471-1528) etching on laid paper, “Man of Sorrows by the Column,” from the Engraved Passion series. A Meder c-d (of e) impression, with very faint traces of the vertical wiping scratches to left of Christ’s feet and beneath monogram. With stamped collector’s marks of Albert W. Blum (1882-1952) (Lugt 79b & 3198) plus inscription in ink, possibly “I.N.” en verso. Ref.: Bartsch, Meder 3. Floated under glass in a giltwood frame with cream textile mat and gilt fillet. Sheet: 4 5/8 in. H x 2 7/8 in. W. Framed: 20 1/4 in. H x 18 1/4 in. W. 1509.
PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville Collection; Albert W. Blum, Switzerland/New Jersey, USA.
CONDITION: A richly and evenly inked impression with strong contrasts. Trimmed to plate edge. With waviness to sheet and dampstaining to lower left and right corners. Additional dampstaining en verso not visible on recto. Remnants of old tape to corners en verso.
