1st item: Mother of God icon, with a hand gesture depicting The Hodegteria, or “She Who Shows the Way.” The Virgin Mary holds Jesus Christ, who has a scroll in his left hand and gives the sign of blessing with his right. Polychrome tempera and gilt on a wood panel, with Cyrillic inscriptions on the sides and bottom. 11 1/2 in. H x 8 1/2 in. W. Late 19th/early 20th century. 2nd item: Polychrome tempera and gilt on a wood panel depicting St. Nicholas (the Wonder Worker) in the center holding a book of scripture flanked by the Virgin Mary and Christ in the upper corners. Titled lower center edge. 14 in. H x 12 1/4 in. W. 1st quarter 20th century, or earlier. 3rd item: Mother of God icon of Virgin Eleousa, or “Tender Mercy,” depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child against her cheek. Polychrome tempera and gilt on a wood panel, with Cyrillic inscriptions to top corners and center sides. 12 1/2 in. H x 9 1/2 in. W. 1st quarter 20th century, or earlier.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Item 1 has a curved back, a crack to the bottom left, and paint loss to the lower right corner. Craquelure overall, with some paint loss within and around haloes. Item 2 is missing a stretcher across a curved back, with some paint loss to the lower right front. Item 3 is constructed of three boards, showing some paint loss between corresponding boards across the front. Overall dirt and a small chip of paint loss to lower right side.
