1st item: Polychrome tempera and wood panel in double giltwood frames, depicting the Virgin Mary wearing a crown and holding the Christ child. Cyrillic inscriptions in both upper corners and across the bottom of the panel. Sainted figure on the left with Cyrillic description, likely Saint Alexius. Framed icon is attached to a larger giltwood frame by a chartreuse velvet mat. Sight: 7 in. H x 5 1/2 W. Framed: 13 1/2 in. H x 11 1/2 in. W x 3 1/2 in. D. 2nd item: Christ Pantocrator (or Pantokrator – “Ruler of All”) icon, oil on wood panel with relief-decorated gilt oklad. Cyrillic lettering on open book and across bottom of frame. Oklad tests copper and zinc. 8 3/4 in. H x 7 in. W. 3rd item: Riza / oklad icon over oil on board panel depicting the Twelve Feasts surrounding a central Resurrection image. Cyrillic descriptions across top, bottom, and sides of metal frame. Label en verso says “Life of Christ.” 12 in. H x 10 1/2 in. W x 1 in. Late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall craquelure and flaking, with scratches to the icon and both frames. Not examined outside either frame. 2nd item: Oklad halo is partially missing on the front, with chips and flaking present to icon. Velvet en verso has tears across sides and back. 3rd item: Overall good condition; velvet present on sides but missing across back.
