Lot 1066: Nashville Stoneware Advertising Pottery Jug, Peerless Distillery, M. Ryan

Dome-shouldered gallon whiskey jug advertising Peerless Distillery. Overall white slip glaze and cobalt stenciled lettering: “Peerless Distillery / Hand-Made Sour Mash / Tenn. Whiskey / M. Ryan / Nashville, Tenn.” within a cobalt border. Approximate dimensions: 11 in. H. Late 19th/early 20th century. Note: M. Ryan advertised in Nashville TN newspapers in the late 1890’s, as a wholesale dealer of foreign and domestic liquors, located at 417 Broad Street.

PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee Collection.

CONDITION: Craquelure to glaze on front and old 1/4 inch chip to shoulder.  A vertical hairline crack extends from 1 1/2 inches below the handle, running down towards the base, and horizontally across mid-center right. Cracks appear stable.
