John Emms (England, 1843-1912) large oil on canvas fox hunting scene with four excited hounds running through the foreground and several others, along with a horse and rider, visible in the distance. Signed "Jno Emms" lower right. Late 19th or early 20th century. Housed in a gilt wood frame with acanthus and reeded molding. Canvas: 37 1/2" H x 54 1/4" W. Frame: 48" W x 64 1/2" H.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Sarah Gaunt, Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Long line of exfoliation and flaking to right side of canvas. Area of repairs, largest 1 1/8": repair to tip of dog''s toe in the lower left quadrant; repair to puncture upper center, in foliage to right of leaping dog; to lower right, below rightmost dog''s right paw; and repair to flake at center, at right of central dog''s head. Other scattered areas of retouching visible under UV light, especially to sky at upper right. No apparent retouching to dogs. Surface grime throughout. Has had selective varnish removal and cleaning. Later frame with some small abrasions and losses and a couple of darkened spots.
