5 (five) European watercolor on wafer miniature paintings including 1 titled “La Reine a la Toilette” depicting a woman at dressing table, having her hair styled; 1 portrait of a woman with tight curls and white dress with blue sash, c. 1800; 1 oval portrait depicting Madame de Pompadour, reclining, after the oil portrait by Francois Boucher; and 2 small portraits of women in hats (one illegibly signed, F–). Paintings ranging in size from 1 1/2 in. diameter to 3 1/4 in. x 2 in. Frames 2 in. x 2 1/2 in. to 6 in. x 5 in. First item appears to date from very early 19th century, other items late 19th to early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Judge John Nixon, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Portrait of lady in white dress has some tiny dark spots to face. Painting after Boucher has a tiny flake left center background. Signed portrait of lady in hat has a tiny flake to glass with dark grime settled inside.
