John Thomas Nolf (Illinois, 1872-1950) oil on board American regionalist landscape painting depicting a river flowing amid hills and groves of trees with colorful Autumn leaves, under a partly cloudy sky. Signed lower left. Channel molded and carved Art Deco style giltwood frame, possibly original. Biographical clippings pasted en verso. Sight: 21 1/4 in. W x 17 1/4 in. H. Frame: 27 1/2 in. H x 23 1/2 in. W. Biography: John Thomas Nolf was an American Regionalist painter known for depictions of rural America and agrarian life, often using residents of Grand Detour, Illinois, as models. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he lived in Missouri, Oregon, and Chicago, where he studied art at the Art Institute and J. Francis Smith Art Academy. He was active in the Oak Park Art League and the Chicago Association of Painters and Sculptors. After a career in commercial art, he settled in Grand Detour and was a founder of the Grand Detour artist colony. His works are in the collections of Northwestern University and the Union League Club of Chicago.
CONDITION: Painting is in overall excellent condition. There is a nail or tack at the lower right edge, covered by paint. Frame with some abrasions and small losses including a 1 in. area of loss to the left sight edge.
