Em Samarco (Italian, fl. late 19th/early 20th c.), oil on canvas painting of a Roma woman who plays a lute-guitar. A mask hangs from her left arm, and she wears a gold coin necklace as she smiles and looks to the viewer’s right. Passages of impasto describe the decoration on her dress and hat. Signed lower left. Housed in an ornate, carved giltwood frame. Sight: 10 1/4 in. H x 25 1/2 in. W. Framed: 44 in. H x 29 1/2 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection.
CONDITION: With craquelure throughout, plus several minor areas of inpainting, largest to lower right, 1-inch x 1/4-inch, and to upper right, 1/2-inch x 1/2-inch, both in the background. 3/4-inch x 1/2-inch puncture without loss to lower center, in dress. Several negligible flakes plus passages of crazing. Canvas is slightly wavy and loose. Frame with abrasions and losses throughout.
