Louis Berthomme Saint Andre (French, 1905-1977), “Simone Devant la Glace,” oil on canvas painting depicting a woman, likely a courtesan, seated half dressed at a vanity table, her arms folded and her face downcast. Signed lower left. Square-molded giltwood frame with linen mat. Stretcher: 24 in. H x 20 in. W. Frame: 28 1/2 in. H x 24 1/2 in. W. Artist biography: Louis Berthomme Saint Andre studied under Fernand Cormon and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Silver medal at the Salon des artistes Francais, where he exhibited from 1924 to 1929. He also painted in Algiers and drew erotic illustrations for books by several authors including Verlaine and Baudelaire.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Lyman O. “Buzz” Heidtke, Nashville, TN, ex-Juster Gallery, New York.
CONDITION: Some slight buckling to canvas, with 1 1/2 inch area of paint cracking below dressing table area, otherwise good condition. Scattered small spots of wear to frame.
