British school oil on canvas bust-length portrait of a gentleman in an olive coat, red mantle, and white cravat. Unsigned. Stretcher faintly inscribed “Painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller” in pencil. Housed in a rusticated giltwood frame with textile liner. Sight: 27 3/4 in. H x 22 1/2 in. W. Framed: 29 1/2 in. H x 34 3/4 in. W. Likely 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: With craquelure and surface grime throughout plus scattered pinpoint flakes, primarily in background at in sitter’s right should, at left. With areas of minor retouching also primarily to background, largest 3/4 x 1/4 inch, to right of sitter’s head.
