Sir John Gilbert (English, 1817-1897) oil on canvas painting depicting a woman pleading with the politically powerful Catholic Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-1661), under the shadow of a sculpture of a saint occupying a nearby niche. Signed “J. Gilbert” lower left. Housed in a period giltwood frame with anthemion and laurel leaf molded decorations and cartouche corners. Sight: 29 in. H x 24 1/2 in. W. Frame: 41 in. H x 36 in. W. Note: Despite being a self taught painter, Sir John Gilbert made a name for himself working in oils and watercolors, as well as wood engravings, which he produced for newspapers and a number of English books including works of Shakespeare. Historical paintings were among his specialities. From 1836 he exhibited at the Society of British Artists, and at the Royal Academy from 1838. He became a member of the RA 1876 and was knighted in 1872.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Lyman O. “Buzz” Heidtke, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Fine craquelure throughout. Some cracking to paint on female subject’s chest. Surface has been revarnished. Frame has been regilt and has scattered surface losses to edges up to 3″L, along with several dark spots and other signs of wear.
