Anglo Indian bone veneered ladies’ work or sewing box, the rectangular tapering body with chamfered cover, all decorated with fine inlaid micromosaic Sadeli work. The hinged lid opens to a fitted interior with compartments for various sewing implements, including spool thread holders, needles, etc. Some spools are still present, along with a mirror. Bail handles at each side. Raised on four ebonized bun feet. Mid 19th century. 12 1/2 in W x 5 1/2 in. H x 9 in. D.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Michael Spalding, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Some overall wear, yellowing, and fading to the exterior, with scattered veneer lifting and chips. Fading and losses to velvet lining on interior. One compartment cover missing. Some original sewing implements possibly missing. The mirror is now detached.
