Edwin Buttery (United Kingdom, 1839-1908) oil on board panoramic arcadian landscape, second half of 19th century. At right a couple accompanied by a dog stands on the banks of a body of water while a boat occupied by two fishermen floats at left. A small house emerges from the woods behind the couple. Signed E. Buttery, lower left. With Beaconsfield Gallery, Buckinghamshire, and Gogh Brothers Fine Art Sellers, Bognor Regis, labels affixed to back of frame and verso, respectively, plus Colonel Roy L. Strong (Tennessee, 1917-2017) sticker affixed to verso. Back of frame is inscribed "Buttery." Housed in a period giltwood frame. Sight: 18" H x 28" W. Frame: 25" H x 34 5/8" W.
CONDITION: Moderate splitting along vertical board junctures running nearly the length of the panel at left and right. With fame abrasions along edges and scattered passages of retouching. Largest areas of retouching are to clouds at upper right, 2 1/4" x 1 1/4", and to split near edge at lower left, 2 1/4" x 1/2". With craquelure and surface grime throughout. Frame with minor abrasions and losses.
