American Gothic Revival ebonized parlor chair with an arched openwork waisted back with a foliate finial and padded serpentine front seat, raised on cabriole legs. With typed and handwritten label affixed to underside inscribed “Purchased 1853 by Russell Smith (1812-96) from KLAUDER-DEGINTHER & CO., Phila., Pa. ‘Rockhill’ Gothic House, collection his son, Xanthus Smith, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.” 38 1/4 in. H x 16 in. W x 15 in. D. Circa 1855.
PROVENANCE: Smith Family (Russell and Xanthus Smith), purchased Klauder-Deginther & Co., Philadelphia, PA; Collection of Lee B. Anderson, New York, NY; Doyle, New York, NY, Estate of Lee B. Anderson, September 19, 2012, lot 1513.
CONDITION: Back is wobbly, with multiple cracks or breaks without loss, plus scattered old chips and abrasions throughout. Otherwise good condition.
