Pair of Baroque still life paintings, oil on canvas laid down on wood panel, both rendered in a muted, almost grisaille palette. Both with exhibition/accession labels verso. One titled "Landscape with Vegetables and Formal Gardens" depicting an outdoor monument scene, the foreground with fruits, cabbages and other vegetables, a bird perched on a basket and a butterfly resting on fruit leaves; the other titled "Landscape with Vegetables and Garden Wall" depicting a garden wall with fruits and vegetables on the ground below and a rabbit eating cabbages, together with butterflies. Both housed under glass in early, matching, possibly original, carved giltwood frames with battens en verso. Unsigned. Sight – 18" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed – 24 3/4" H x 22" W. Likely Southern European, late 17th century. Provenance: a Nashville, Tennessee estate, exhibited at The Tennessee Fine Arts Center at Cheekwood prior to 1990. CONDITION: 1st painting with 2 vertical partial cracks upper margin, one vertical crack lower margin, errant piece of wood between glass and painting, overall grime, abrasions and losses to frame. 2nd painting with shrinkage crack to panel running full vertical length of painting, overall grime, abrasions and losses to frame.
