Edward John Cobbett (British, 1815-1899) oil on canvas genre painting, “The Fisherman’s Family.” A fisherman leans against a stone and places his hand on his chin as he watches his wife carry away a net and basket at right. His children — a boy and a girl — sit beside him. Signed “E J Cobbett” to stone, lower left. Housed in a giltwood frame with name and title plate. Sight: 29 1/2 in H x 24 1/2 in W. Frame: 37 1/4 in H x 32 1/4 in W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Charles R. Ragan, KY.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. With old repair and retouching to top of girl’s hat and stone to her left, 2 1/2 inch x 1 1/2 inch, and to stone to her right, 1 inch x 3/4 inch. Plus scattered, minor retouching especially to center left, in body of fisherman. Canvas is slightly loose in stretcher. Frame with fine cracking plus minor abrasions and losses.
