Italian school, late 17th/early 18th century oil on canvas Holy Family painting depicting Mary and the infant Christ accompanied by Joseph and John the Baptist. Mary and Joseph gaze affectionately at Christ, who looks to John the Baptist as John kisses his hand. The figural group emerges from a dark, tenebristic background. Housed in a simple giltwood frame. Sight: 40 1/4 in. H x 30 in. W. Framed: 43 in. H x 33 in. W. Likely 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Alex and Cristina Ionescu, South Carolina, by descent from his father, the artist, conservator, and collector Vlaicu Ionescu of New York (1922-2001).
CONDITION: 10-inch x 5-1/2 inch area of retouching and minor inpainting to tear, lower right, plus 2-inch L tear without loss plus 2 1/2-inch L scratch to white cloth beneath Christ’s left thigh. 1-inch L repaired tear with retouching to top of John’s hair, see U/V photography. Faint stretcher marks, especially to right edge, plus frame abrasion. Minor craquelure throughout.
