When he was four years old, his mother was killed in a German bombing of the hospital where she worked as a nurse, and Ironside''s uncle brought him to Knoxville, TN. He went back to England for awhile to study at the Royal Academy of Art, but ultimately settled in Knoxville to work as an artist and raise a family. His work gained national attention when Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee gave an interview to Esquire Magazine mentioning Ironside''s work. (Source: Betsey Creekmore, University of Tennessee). Ironside is best known for his landscapes, rendered in a style which has drawn comparisons to that of Andrew Wyeth.
