American Crazy quilt top, stitched of individual blocks with embroidered initials (unknownnames), a date "Jan 27, 1897", flowers, fans, animals, and leaves. There is one block with painted initials. The seam line embroidery stitching is exceptional with a multitude of different designs. Fabrics include a wide variety of suiting wool, challis, sculpted and plain velvets, and some silk. 74 3/4" H x 75" W. Note: The quilt top is unusually large for most crazy quilt projects.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville, TN Collection.
CONDITION: Excellent condition with little fading and fabric deterioration. Some small moth holes are visible along the lower border. The quilt top has not been quilted or backed.
