Two (2) Civil War era canteens. 1st item: Cedar or cherry wood canteen,with varnished iron bands around the circumference and three iron sling keepers. Bunghole with original pour spout. Retains old, possibly original leather sling with an iron buckle. Possible initials "AHM " or "WHV" to surface. 8 1/2" dia. x 2 3/8" W. 2nd item: Black painted metal canteen, applied metal belt backstrap. Bunghole with original pour spout, possibly later cork stopper. 6" dia. x 1 1/2" W. Provenance: private Nashville collection. CONDITION: Both items in overall good condition. 1st item: Surface scratches to be expected from age and manner of use. Cracking to leather. Natural age shrinkage to wood. 2nd item: Surface scratches resulting in loss to paint. Bend to base of pour spout. Surface dents.
