Marvin “Chico” Posey (Tennessee/North Carolina, 1964-2003) oil on canvas modernist painting of a couple who dance together in a colorful nightclub setting. Biographical Note: African American artist Marvin “Chico” Posey was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina to an Army Captain father who was transferred to Fort Campbell on the Kentucky/Tennessee border. Posey attended Clarksville High School and as a young artist exhibited work at the Knoxville Museum of Art. He enlisted in the Marine Corps reserves before enrolling at Austin Peay State University, where he studied graphic design. He graduated in 1985 and lived and worked in Nashville throughout his short career. Posey often painted before an audience during live musical performances. He died tragically of a heart attack at the age of 37 following a performance in Atlanta.
