Civil War-era ambrotype, sixth plate, depicting a seated Confederate soldier in uniform, holding a revolver in one hand and a bowie knife in the other. The ambrotype descended a Maury County, TN family and the sitter is believed to be Watson Paine Cook/Cooke, (born 1841 in KY, living Maury Co., TN by 1860), mustered into Sparkman's Company, TN Light Artillery (Maury Artillery) as a private, mustered out as a sergeant. Housed in an embossed leather case. Case: 3 3/4" H x 3 1/4" W x 3/4" D.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dorothy Sowell, Columbia, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Ambrotype with discoloration spots, losses to black backing primarily to chest and left shoulder, but still visible. Case with general wear, lid is separated from case with old brown cloth repair to spine.
