American School folk art portrait of a gentleman in black coat and tie, early middle age, with distant ship visible over his shoulder. Unsigned. Pencil inscription in a circular flourish, verso, and the number 677. Housed under glass in a plain stained wood frame. Sight: 17 in. H x 15 in. W. Frame: 20 in. H x 18 in. W. Circa 1830.
PROVENANCE: Found in West Tennessee.
CONDITION: Canvas is unstretched and laid (but not adhered) to a board backing. There is considerable wear and craquelure, with a few small scattered areas of paint loss, difficult to see because the color of the background blends with the color of the canvas. Frame is old, but may not be original, and exhibits wear. A spacer is needed between the frame and canvas.
