Two (2) early 19th century English school girl samplers. 1st item: English school girl alphabet and verse sampler, signed and dated "Martha Able 1813". Top seven alternating floral vine, upper case alphabet or lozenge rows. Middle section of two bird and floral sprays framing phrase "In my Beginning God be my Speed. In Grace and Virtue to proceed, That I may run that Happy race, That Heaven may be my Dwelling place". Lower half incorporating strawberry vines, lower case alphabet, five pictorial vignettes, upper case alphabet, strawberry vine cartouche surrounding two large floral sprays and maker's name and date. Six stitched crowns are incorporated in the design. Housed in an older stained brown pine molded frame. Sight – 16 5/8" H x 14" W. Framed – 19" H x 16 1/2" W. 2nd item: English silk on linen school girl or marriage alphabet and verse sampler, dated 1809. Laurel leaf top border, row four birds over a verse: "In marriage prefer the person before wealth virtue before beauty and the mind before body then you have a wife a friend and a companion". Inscribed "Elizabeth Codling Bramcote Notinghamshire 1809". One uppercase block alphabet over a cartouche of flower basket, four figures and five animals, lower half also with house, other figures, deer, turkey, dogs, trees, flower pots, side borders of alternating flowers and base border of berries and vine. Housed in a later black and gold molded frame. Sight – 16" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed – 18 1/4" H x 15"W. Provenance: Sevier County, TN private collection. CONDITION: 1st item: Light fading to some threads and discoloration in some areas. Small area of water damage lower left corner, approx. 7/8" H x 2-1/2" W. 2nd item: Overall good condition. Some fading to red. Scattered small areas of repair to linen, mostly upper left corner and lower left and right corners.
