Two (2) United Kingdom 19th century samplers. 1st item: Large English school girl needlework sampler, wool and cotton on linen, signed Ann Soothill 1857, strawberry vine outer border, inner wide border with "Industry", two crowns, four crosses, two birds, two beehives, flower pots, trees, large butterfly, cottage, reindeer and two large roses. Center phrase, "There is a region lovelier far/Than Sages tell or Poets sing/Brighter than summers beauties are/And softer than she tints of sprin (g)/It is all holy and serrene/The land of glory and repose/No cloud obscures the radiant scene/There set a tear of sorrow flows/In vain the philosophic eye/may seek to view the fair abode/Or find it is the curtained sky/It is the dwelling place of GOD". Sampler acquired in MA. Probably English. Housed in a large wooden ogee frame. Sight – 23 1/2" H x 23" W. Framed – 33" H x 33" W. 2nd item: Wales, United Kingdom school girl verse sampler, silk on linen, leaf and berry outer border, fruit trees, floral baskets, birds, dogs, stars and hearts as inner border, large yellow, gold and green floral spray in center with verse above, "Lord thou hast search'd and seen me thro Thine eye beholds with piercing view My rising and my resting hours My heart and flesh with all their pow'rs My thoughts before they are my own Are to my God distinctly known He knows the words i mean to speak Ere from my op'ning lips they break". Signed within red and grey stitched border: Elizabeth William's Work Carmanthen May the 23 1826. Housed in a mahogany veneered frame. Sight – 17" H x 12 1/2" W. Framed – 22" H x 17 1/2" W. Provenance: Sevier County, TN private collection. CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition. Some staining and fraying along edges. Few small stains near phrase. 2nd item: 1" loss of veneer to frame, top center. Scattered insect damage, mainly at perimeter. Minor discoloration.
