Erte (Romain De Tirtoff, Russian/French, 1892-1990) Art Deco gouache costume design painting of a full-length figure who wears a wide-brimmed hat, cape, gloves, and knee-high boots, 1916. Identified in en verso as the French swordswoman and opera singer Julie d’Aubigny (1673-1707), known as Mademoiselle de Maupin or La Maupin, who often cross-dressed as depicted here. From the series “Les Amazones.” Signed in pen lower right and additionally stamp-signed, stamped “Composition originals,” and numbered “N 7” and inscribed “Les amazones / IX – 1916 / Mademoiselle de Maupin / 1673-1707)” in pencil, plus “ID 10229” in a different hand. Housed under plexiglass in a distressed, silvered wood frame with cream textile liner, silvered wood fillet, and black textile mat. Sight: 8 1/4 in H x 5 1/4 in W. Frame: 26 1/8 in H x 22 7/8 in W.

CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Not examined outside of frame.
