Leon Levinstein (American, 1913-1988) gelatin silver print titled "Lower East Side", depicting a New York man with a cigarette in his mouth; the tilted head of another man is slightly out of focus in the foreground as he walks by. Writing en verso of photograph reads, "Leon Levinstein: New York, c. 1955, gelatin silver print, Gift of Stuart E. Karn, 1996.753, Ry21484". Rectangular Stamp with artist's name and "LL.78.6" en verso. Housed behind glass in a matted contemporary black frame. Sight – 9 3/4" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed – 19 1/8" H x 23 1/8" W. Note: this image is also in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Biography: Leon Levinstein attended the Maryland Institute of Art after his family removed to Baltimore from West Virginia during the Great Depression. He served in the Army Air Force (Air Corps) during World War II. Levinstein studied photography under Sid Grossman at the Photo League and later at Grossman's residence. He gained national attention during the 1950s when he was featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art. (Source: National Gallery of Art). Provenance: private Nashville, TN collection.
