1861 50C CSA Scott restrike half dollar silver coin, PCGS AU58. Obverse: Seated Liberty. Reverse: Confederate State device. (Coin Index PCGS 340402) Note: In the post Civil War period J.W. Scott (a Northerner) saw a demand for Civil War Confederate States historical coins. Scott and his peers purchased 500 1861 half dollars and the CSA die (by A.H.M. Patterson) to restrike the coins including this one offered for auction. To make the restrike, Scott had the reverse filed, shaved or planed down. This makes an even substrate to impress the coins with the CSA die with detail. Numismatists have observed that the face of the 1861 coin has an overall softness on the high relief points because of the pressure used to restrike the reverse. Over 150 years later this rare and collectable coin still remains sought after among avid coin collectors.
PROVENANCE: A Nashville, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Graded by PCGS as AU58
