A lighted pharmacy or apothecary jeweled copper and brass trade sign (or “show mortar”) in the form of a mortar and pestle, the mortar constructed of copper plates featuring multicolor glass cabochons fitted with interior lights and raised on a tripodal base with paw feet. Pestle is constructed of brass and also features multicolor glass cabochons. Approximate dimensions: 37 in. H x 22 1/2 in. W. 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI. Ex. Max M. Warsaw Collection (Chicago), as pictured in a 1953 newspaper article from the Chicago Tribune. PDF copy available to winning bidder.
CONDITION: The base is likely a later addition to the mortar body. Copper top is also likely a replacement. Fixture is in working order.
