1st item: Double Hemisphere World Map, published by A. J. Johnson and Benjamin P. Ward as plates nos. 4-5 in the 1863 edition of "Johnson's Family Atlas". Detailed large double hemisphere map of the world, with the hemispheres meeting in the Atlantic Ocean. The Antarctic continent is only partially illustrated due to limited Antarctic exploration in 1863. Alaska is labeled as "Russian Possessions" since the map predates the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Housed under glass in a later heavy koa wood frame with marbleized mat. Sight: 27" W x 15" H. Framed: 39" W x 28" H. 2nd item: "New Military Map of the United States," 1861, from "Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World…", printed and published by Johnson & Browning, New York. Civil War period map divided into military departments as specified from War Department data. Also shown are the forts, military posts, rivers, lakes, and mountainous regions as they existed in the first year of the Civil War. Insets of the Southern harbors complete this map. Housed under glass in a later heavy koa wood frame with marbleized mat. Sight: 24" W x 17 1/4" H. Framed: 39" W x 33" H.
