Miniature portrait of George Washington, by descent in the family of U.S. President John Tyler. The bust length portrait depicts Washington in uniform, in three quarter view before a red drape with landscape visible beyond. Signed JL lower right. Circular brass frame with floral/scroll decoration. The back is covered in old newspaper. Sight: 3 1/2 in. diameter. Frame: 6 in. diameter. Likely Continental, 19th century. Note: This portrait combines elements of Washington portraits by both Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart but does not seem to be based on a specific known Washington portrait or print. It is not known what date this painting entered the Tyler family collection.
PROVENANCE: By descent in the family of U.S. President John Tyler to present consignor.
CONDITION: Painting in overall good condition with some tiny scattered inclusions under the glass. Some oxidation to frame. Old tape remnant to reverse.
